ガウディ、神秘 - Gaudí, místico - Mystical Gaudí

生徒たちがこの国の名所をGoogle Imagesを通じてじゃなく、実際にこの目で見るための「社会見学」は、だいたいどの学校でも実践している教育プロジェクトのひとつだろう。バルセロナと言えば、モダニズム。芸術的に高く評価されているモダニズム芸術の主役は、やっぱりガウディだ。というわけで、生徒たちをサグラダ・ファミリアや、中世の戦士を彷彿させる煙突でおなじみのラ・ペドレーラといった作品の見学に連れて行くことはめずらしくない。

ガウディといえば、革新的、前衛的な建築家をイメージする人が多いと思う。確かに、作風はそうだったに違いない。でも、彼の人生観に関しては、２０世紀というより中世に近かったようだ。敬虔なカトリックで、神秘主義的傾向があったと伝えられている。サグラダ・ファミリアの建築に着手する前は長期間の過酷な断食を行い、健康を害する寸前だったらしい。そして路面電車による轢死。清貧を信条としていたガウディは、どこに行くのも徒歩だった。乞食のような格好で轢かれていた老人を救助しようとした通行人は皆無だったという。

誰にでも、自分の好きなように生きる権利はある。熱狂的な信者だろうが、生徒たちを引率する教師だろうが、どの人生もリスペクトされてしかるべきもの。生徒たちはといえば、あちこち見学に引きずられ、絵葉書のような場所の美しさにも無感覚になってしまったようだ。ガウディの世界観を理解しようなんて無理な注文。僕にだってそんなことはできない。でも、まだ救いはありそうだ。生徒たちは携帯の画面を通じて、中世の戦士をかたどった煙突をじっと見ている。

Gaudí, místico.

Salir de excursión, para que los alumnos conozcan lo mejor de este país en persona y no en Google Images, forma parte del proyecto educativo de casi cualquier escuela, y siendo aquí el modernismo el periodo artístico más valorado, y Gaudí su artista más famoso, con frecuencia nos encontramos llevando a nuestros alumnos a ver obras como la Sagrada Familia o la Pedrera, de la que en la foto se pueden  unas chimeneas que recuerdan yelmos de guerreros medievales.

Muchas personas tienen la imagen de Gaudí como arquitecto innovador y vanguardista, y seguramente fue así en cuanto a la forma en que creaba arte. Sin embargo, parece que su manera de ver la vida tenía más que ver con la manera del ver el mundo en la Edad Media que con las ideas del siglo XX. Era un católico con tendencias místicas. Antes de empezar a construir la Sagrada Familia, pasó un periodo de ayuno tan largo y estricto, que estuvo a punto de arruinarle la salud; y murió atropellado por un tranvía, porque su ideal de pobreza y austeridad lo llevaba a ir a todos lados a pie y a vestirse de una manera tan pobre, que nadie se preocupó mucho por socorrer a un anciano herido con aspecto prácticamente de mendigo.

Es profundamente respetable que cada uno viva su vida como quiera, como fanático de una religión o como profesor, conduciendo de excursión que han sido arrastrados con tanta frecuencia de un lugar a otro, que están casi totalmente anestesiados ante la belleza de lugares como el de la foto. La manera de ver el mundo de Gaudí les resultaría profundamente incomprensible, como a mí; pero no todo está perdido: miran las chimeneas con forma de yelmos de guerreros a través de las pantallas de sus teléfonos móviles.

Mystical Gaudí

Almost any school educational project includes cultural visits in order that students get first-hand experience on the country’s best sites, and not through Google Images. Being this place’s best cultural assets those linked with modernism with Gaudí as best known artist, it is only natural that more often than not, we find ourselves with a group of students visiting places such as Sagrada Familia or Pedrera. You can see the upper part of La Pedrera chimneys on the photo. For many people, they look like warrior helmets from the Middle Ages.

Many people see Gaudí as an innovative architect, a vanguardist, and they are surely right in the way he created art. However, it seems that his way to see life had much more to do with the Middle Ages than with the 20^th century. He was a fervent catholic believer with mystical tendencies. Before he began working at Sagrada Familia, he spent a long time fasting so strictly, that he almost ruined his health, and he died, years later, knocked down by a tram, because his ideals of poverty and austerity made him go everywhere on foot and dress so poorly, than nobody really cared much about helping an injured old man, who practically looked like a beggar.

It is deeply respectable that people can lead the lives they choose, as a religion fanatic or as a teacher leading students groups, who have been dragged so often from one place to another, that they are almost totally rendered insensible to the beauty of places such as the one we can see on the picture. Gaudí’s views on the world would be utterly unfathomable for them, as it is for me; but not everything is lost: my students look at those chimneys, which seem warrior helmets to some of us, through their mobiles screens.
