新学期 - Nuevo curso escolar - A new school year

夏が終わるのは９月２３日だが、ほとんどのスペイン人は８月いっぱいバカンスをとるため、９月に入ると同時に夏が終わってしまったような気になる。それでも海沿いの土地では暑さが長引いて、四季というよりほとんど二季。１１月上旬にようやく半そでからセーターに着替える、というのも決してめずらしくない。同じように、５月上旬にはセーターがいきなり半そでに変わっていたりする。スペイン語には、そんな１年をうまく表現したことわざがある。

「６ヶ月の冬と６ヶ月の地獄」（Seis meses de invierno y seis meses de infierno）

教師の夏休みは長い。７月と８月の間は、ほとんど学校に行かなくていいからだ。もちろん、夏期研修に参加したり、新学期の準備を整えたりと、やることがないわけじゃない。生徒はというと、６月２０日前後には学期を終える。今年の新学期が始まるのは９月１２日だ（教師の仕事再開は９月１日）。夏休みがこれだけ長いと、保護者は大変だ。共働きの両親なら、子供たちをどこに預けるか考えなければならない。とくに、まだバカンスが始まっていない７月は深刻だ。運がよければ、祖父母が育児を引き受けてくれるかもしれない。それが無理なら、お金を払って子供たちをいろんな夏期活動に参加させることになる。ずいぶん前から、多くの保護者が「学校の夏休み期間を短縮してほしい」と主張してきた。とはいえ、ここ数年間、経済危機のあおりで何度も給与を減額された教師たちが、就労時間の延長をかんたんに受け入れるとは思えない。

なにはともあれ、ひとつだけ断言できることがある。明日学校で、同僚や生徒に「夏休みはどうだった？」と聞いたら、きっとこんな答えが返ってくるだろう。

「あぁ！あっという間に終わっちゃったよ！」

Nuevo curso escolar

El verano acabará el 23 de septiembre, pero para la mayoría de españoles, que tienen cuatro semanas de vacaciones en agosto, el verano acaba al empezar septiembre. En la costa, las temperaturas altas se extienden más, y las cuatro estaciones se confunden frecuentemente en dos. No es extraño cambiar la manga corta por un jersey a principios de noviembre, y al revés a principios de mayo. Hay un refrán castellano que resume el año en «seis meses de invierno y seis meses de infierno».

Las vacaciones de los profesores son más largas. Durante julio y agosto la mayoría no tenemos que ir al centro escolar, aunque es cierto que tenemos que hacer cursillos de verano y preparar el nuevo curso. Los alumnos suelen acabar el curso alrededor del 20 de junio y este año empezarán el nuevo el 12 de septiembre. Tantas vacaciones suponen un problema para padres y madres que trabajan y tienen que buscar dónde “aparcar” a sus hijos pequeños, especialmente en julio. Con suerte, hay abuelos que se encarguen, y si no, pues hay que pagar actividades de verano. Hace tiempo que muchos padres piden que sus hijos tengan menos vacaciones de verano, pero es difícil que los profesores acepten trabajar más horas después de ver reducido su sueldo unas cuantas veces los últimos años por la crisis.

En cualquier caso, estoy bastante seguro de una cosa: cuando mañana vaya al colegio y me encuentre con un profesor o uno de mis alumnos y les pregunte cómo les han ido las vacaciones, la respuesta será:

‒¡Ah, se me han hecho muy cortas!


A new school year

Summer will end on September 23rd, but for most Spaniards, whose four weeks of summer holidays end at the end of August, summer ends when September comes. On the coast, hot weather goes farther, because the four seasons in Spain mix frequently up in two. It is not uncommon to change short-sleeved clothes directly to a jumper in November, and the other way round, when May begins. There is a Spanish proverb whish summarizes our yearly weather: “Six months in winter and six months in hell”.

Summer holidays for teachers are longer. July and August are not working months at school, although it is true that we teachers have to take summer courses and prepare the new school year. School lessons usually end for students  around June 20^th and the new school year will begin in September 12^th. Such a long period of holidays can become a big problem for those parents with jobs who have to find out what to do with their children while they are working, especially in July. If they are lucky, grandparents will take care of the problem. When not, parents will have to pay to solve it. It is not new that many parents claim that school summer holidays should be shortened, but it is not easy for teachers to accept extending their working hours after seeing their salary cut down every year since the crisis began. Would you do it?

Anyway, I am sure about this: tomorrow, if I run into one of my colleagues or maybe a student and ask them about their summer holidays, they will surely say:

‒Too short, weren´t they?
