El invierno ha llegado.
No me entusiasma
la navidad. Prefiero el invierno. Intento evitar los centros comerciales
durante estas fechas, especialmente porque me molestan los villancicos de la
música ambiente. Sin embargo, entiendo que muchas personas sientan la
obligación de ser más felices que de costumbre, si pueden permitírselo. También
entiendo, aunque me parece ridícula y tonta, la actitud de algunos alcaldes de
izquierda recién elegidos en primavera, que intentan demostrar hasta qué punto
son laicos atacando las tradiciones cristianas, ya que considerar demasiado
conservadoras, aunque nunca se atreverían a atacar las tradiciones de otras
religiones, como la musulmana o la judía, porque eso se consideraría
políticamente incorrecto, o tal vez simplemente arriesgado. La alcaldesa de
Barcelona, por ejemplo, ha instalado un belén este año ante el ayuntamiento que
es perfectamente laico y muchas personas consideran una perfecta porquería.
Otros alcaldes han decidido no celebrar la Navidad, sino el solsticio de
invierno con una idea de lo que es progreso que nos lleva directamente de
vuelta al Neolítico y a Stonehenge, hace 4000 años. Algunos otros han decidido
cambiar la tradición de los Reyes Magos (los que traen los regalos de Navidad a
los niños españoles en la madrugada del seis de enero) para avanzar en la
paridad entre hombres y mujeres: dos de los reyes continuarán siéndolo, pero
ahora habrá también una reina. Una auténtica parida. No tengo mucho respeto a
las tradiciones, porque suelen ser más inventos recientes que costumbres
antiguas, pero si realmente son inútiles o perniciosas, ¿por qué no eliminarlas?
Tal vez estos nuevos alcaldes de izquierdas simplemente no se atreven. Se
parecen mucho a los de antes de derechas: prefieren comprometer sus principios
a comprometer sus perspectivas electorales en el futuro.
Yo prefiero el
invierno a la Navidad, pero claro, este invierno mediterráneo de cielos azules
y quince grados de temperatura exterior. Con quince grados bajo cero y una
buena capa de nieve, igual preferiría creer en la Navidad.

Winter has come
I am not a Christmas fan. I just prefer winter. I try
to keep myself out of shopping centres these days, especially because I feel
annoyed by those Christmas carols in the background music. However, I
understand that many people feel the obligation to be happier than usual, if
they can afford it. I can also understand (although I consider it ridiculous
and naïve) the attitude of some left-winged mayors, who were just elected at
the local elections in spring. They try to prove that they are secular by
disregarding Christian traditions, which they consider too conservative,
although they would not dare attack the traditions of other religions, such as
the Muslim or the Jew, because it would be considered either politically not
correct, or maybe just risky. Barcelona´s mayoress decided to have a nativity scene set in front of the town hall, which is perfectly secular and many
consider a perfect piece of shit. Other mayors have decided not to celebrate
Christmas, but Winter´s Solstice with an idea of being politically progressive that
leads us to the Neolithic Age and Stonehenge, four thousand years ago. Some others have decided to change the
Spanish tradition of the Three Holy Kings. They bring Christmas presents to the
children in Spain on January 6th. They are doing this to make a step
forward in the equality among men and women: from now on, there will be two
kings and a queen. Nonsense. I do not respect traditions much, because they
tend to be rather modern things than ancient customs, but in case they are
really good for nothing or harmful, shouldn´t we just wipe them out? Maybe
those new left-winged politicians just don´t dare. They are like the old
right-winged politicians: they’d rather jeopardize their principles than their
future electoral hopes.
I prefer winter to Christmas, but of course, I mean
this Mediterranean winter with blue skies and 59 ºF outside. If we had 5 ºF
outside and a good layer of snow, I would probably believe in Christmas.
