カンニングペーパー - Chuletas - Cheating sheets

今日、カンニングペーパーを作っている生徒を見つけた。今時の若者はまったくたるんでいて、やつらがこの国の将来を背負うと思うと、お先真っ暗だ…とグチってもよさそうだが、それはいくらなんでも不当というものだろう。しかも、あまりに陳腐な文句だ。事実、４千年前のものと言われるバビロニアの陶器の破片にも、こう書かれていた。

「今どきの若者は心の奥まで腐っている。みんな怠け者で、何も尊重しない。われわれが若かった頃のようには決してなりえないだろう」

カンニングペーパーを作るという作業は、学習内容をまとめるのに役立つ。あとで使わなければ、いい学習方法だ。作っても使わない生徒もいる。それは、試験問題という未知のものに対する“保険”であると同時に、思春期世代にありがちな反抗から来る違反行為でもある。僕は生徒に、「カンニングペーパーを作成する」という宿題を時々出す。写真は二通りのカンニングペーパーで、一つは本物、もう一つは宿題用の偽物だ。

カンニングペーパーは試験と同じくらい長い歴史を持ち、バビロニアよりも古い時代から存在してきた。そして、スペイン（できれば規則を守らない、ズルく狡猾なことで有名な国）にかぎらずどの国でも使われる手段だと思う。ただ、この国ではカンニング行為が比較的大目に見られていて、笑ってすまされることさえある。僕の場合は違う。カンニングして試験に合格しようとする生徒は、罰をたよりに生徒を教育する教師と同じで、結局は挫折することになる。

カンニングのテーマに固執しているわけじゃないが、実際に時々こうしてカンニングペーパーが現れる。お決まりの小さい紙を隠し持つのであれば、創造性に欠けるから落第、といったところだろう。ペンケースの中の定規の裏に貼ってあったら？残念ながら、この手はもう使えない。試験中ペンケースの持ち込みは禁止されている。その他、もっと想像に富む方法はいろいろある。だからといって許されるわけじゃないが、許されてしまいそうだ。コンパスで小さな文字を彫った透明のボールペンを見たことがある。試験勉強をした方がずっと時間を節約できたことだろう。２度の試験で両方ともミニスカートを履いて来た女子生徒もいた。ミニスカートなんてめったに履かない生徒だったため、一応女性教師に見てもらったら、案の定、すその折り返し部分にホッチキスで留めたカンニングペーパーがあった。本物のカンニングペーパーは写真右。巻いてボールペンの中に隠すタイプだ。

Chuletas

He pillado a un alumno haciéndose una chuleta, así que podría escribir que los jóvenes de hoy día son unos vagos y unos gamberros y que nuestro futuro será muy negro si tenemos que depender de ellos, pero sería incierto e injusto. Además, sería poco original. En un fragmento de cerámica babilónica datada hace cuatro mil años se lee:

“Esta juventud está corrompida hasta el fondo del corazón. Los jóvenes son vagos y no respetan nada. Jamás serán como cuando nosotros éramos jóvenes.”

Hacer chuletas es un buen método para aprender a sintetizar, si no se utilizan después. Algunos las hacen, pero luego no las utilizan. Son una especie de seguro contra lo desconocido, que son las preguntas del examen, y también una transgresión, algo típico en los adolescentes. Yo en alguna ocasión les pongo de deberes hacer una chuleta. En la foto se pueden ver dos: una auténtica, y la otra falsa, de deberes.

Las chuletas deben ser tan antiguas como los exámenes y más antiguas que Babilonia, y no creo que sean más habituales en este país (con fama de ser un país de pícaros o listillos, dispuestos a saltarse las reglas siempre que sea posible) que en cualquier otro. Es cierto que aquí ese tipo de comportamientos siempre se ha visto con tolerancia, incluso con cierta simpatía. No es mi caso. Un alumno que recurre a copiar como método de aprobar exámenes es como un profesor que recurre al castigo como método educativo: ambos fracasan.

Tampoco estoy obsesionado con el tema; sin embargo, de vez en cuando aparece alguna chuleta. Si es el típico papelito escondido, se merece el suspenso por poco creativo. ¿Un papelito pegado en la parte de detrás de una regla pequeña dentro del estuche? Imposible, no pueden tener el estuche en el pupitre durante el examen. Otras soluciones son más imaginativas. No merecen el perdón, pero casi. Recuerdo un bolígrafo transparente lleno de letras diminutas grabadas con un compás. Hubiera tardado mucho menos en estudiar para el examen. Recuerdo otra ocasión en que una chica vino a dos exámenes seguidos con minifalda, cuando no la solía llevar nunca. Le pedí a una profesora que la comprobara y encontró una chuleta grapada en el dobladillo de la falda. La chuleta auténtica de la foto es la de la derecha, la que se enrolla y se oculta dentro de un boli.  

Cheating sheets

I have caught a student preparing a cheating sheet, so I might be entitled to write that young people nowadays are just lazy troublemakers and that our future will be black, if we had to depend on them, but that would be false and unfair. Besides, It would not be original at all. On a piece of pottery from Babylon dated 4.000 thousand years back, there is an inscription saying:

“This youth is totally corrupted. Young people are lazy and respect nothing. They will never be like us when we were young.”

Making cheating sheets is a good way to learn how to summarize, that is to say, if they are not used afterwards. Some students make them, but they won´t use them. They are a sort of insurance against the unknown (exam questions) and they are also a transgression, something which is commonly found in teenagers. Now and then, I ask them to make a cheating sheet as homework. You can see two on the picture: one of them is genuine, and the other one is false, it was only homework.

Cheating sheets must be as old as exams, and even older than Babylon, and I don´t think they are more common in this country (well-known internationally to be a country full of rogues and “smart” ones, who are always ready to side-step rules when possible) than in any other one. It is true that that behavior has always been tolerated here, and even seen with good eyes somehow. Not by me. A student who cheats as a method of passing exams is the same as a teacher who uses punishment as the core of their educative system: both student and teacher are failures.

I am not obsessed with the subject, either. However, once in a while, a cheating sheet pops up. If it is the typical hidden small piece of paper, the student deserves failing the term for lack of creativity. A small piece of paper on the back of a ruler in a pencil case? No pencil cases are allowed at exams, but there are more imaginative solutions. They don´t deserve forgiveness, but almost. I remember a plastic transparent biro full of small tiny letters painfully engraved with a compass. It would have taken them less time to study for the exam in the normal way, I think. I remember a girl who was wearing a miniskirt to two exams in a row, but she didn´t use to wear them. I asked a lady teacher to check it, and she found a cheating sheet stapled on the miniskirt turn-up. The genuine cheating sheet on the picture is the one on the right. It fitted perfectly the insides of a biro.
