Soccer fanatics
In Spanish, we say you are “aficionado al fútbol” (a soccer fan), when you like soccer very much. You can also be “aficionado” to bullfights or throwing olive seeds with your mouth. The word “aficionado” has got a friendly meaning. It implies an activity that is not professional, something you are not an expert at and, at the end of all, something that is not very important.

It is a commonplace to say that soccer is very popular in Spain, mainly among men, although there are more and more women in soccer stadiums. I am afraid that many of them, both men and women, are more soccer fanatics than soccer fans. “Fanatic” is not a friendly term, because it implies radicalism, inflexibility, aggressiveness.

There are many people who use their link to a soccer team to identify themselves with a group against another one. Those end up seeing all around their favourite sport in absolute tribal terms (their team is just the best and the rest are just rubbish) and transmit their ways to see reality to their own children. What is worse, they use soccer as a way to escape from their own life, which they dislike,  and be a part of another one where everything is easy to understand (victory-defeat / the good-the evil). They don´t need there any compromise with their own future, their family´s or their friends´.

There are people who have to endure a three or four hour journey on a coach to watch a soccer game. And then back home. I don´t think they can be in a good shape to work on the next day. Others, as the one in the picture, make models of the cups their team has won in a successful season to show everybody how proud they are to be a part of it and attack those who are not a part of it. They say they do those things for “love for the colours” to indicate the love they feel for the colours on their favourite team´s shirt. I think that the sentence is too sweet. I would say they do it for pure fanaticism, and that there is quite a lot of aggressiveness against those who are not sharing that “love”. I would prefer those FC Barcelona fans who, last century, in the 20s, used to come to Barcelona with the excuse of watching a soccer game, but in fact they went to a whorehouse to have a bit of fun. When they went out, there was a blackboard outside with the result of the game and some added information to form a perfect alibi. I am not for marital infidelity, and I guess there were and there are some women who were and are perfectly happy with their husbands going out to soccer games on Sunday afternoons, but I would judge that human weakness in a more benevolent way than I do it with aggressiveness or fanaticism.

Soccer in this country has always been a political tool. In dictator Franco’s time, after the Second World War, when we were Europe´s lepers from a political point of view, Real Madrid FC was used by the government to show a nice image of that dictatorship. On the other hand, FC Barcelona has always been used to favour the cause of independentism in Catalonia, and now more than ever

Someone could conclude, in this case, that soccer is a show for people with poor educational standards and easy to be manipulated. Far from that, soccer is like religion, it contains more feeling than rationalism, so everyone can fall in that trap. May intellectuals have been and are soccer fans. Great books have been written on the subject, such as Eduardo Galeano´s El fútbol a sol y a sombra or Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch. There are soccer fanatics among low qualified workers and among university professors, too. A former student of mine, a brilliant girl, who has just begun a degree, told me recently that she was very happy with her new life at university and with almost every teacher. There was one, though, she didn´t like so much. He began his first lesson with these words:

“I am very fond of soccer. I support FC Barcelona, so on game days we will be finishing our lessons earlier than usual. If there are Real Madrid supporters over there, you’d better keep it for you. Otherwise, your marks will suffer”.

My opinion is that anyone saying those words does not deserve to be a teacher, even though he might not be talking seriously, but I doubt it.

Religión - Religion

Religion

When I was a child, I used to spend summers at a village situated on a small hill of a high plateau, in the middle of nowhere. As expected, the most important building in the village was situated on top of the hill: the church. On Sundays, as the other five children in the village, I was an altar boy, that is to say, I helped the priest at mass. There was a dairy mass, but it was just attended by a few old women, so we were not needed, then. However, the church was full on Sundays, if only because nobody wanted to be the subject of others´ gossip. Religion was a social issue, not a spiritual one, but compliance with the rites was not a point for discussion.

Nowadays everything is different. During the end of this school year, we read in a text a reference to the biblical story of Job, which no student had heard about, so I explained it somehow. The devil told God that his servant Job was loyal to his god because things were going really well for him, so God let the devil kill Job´s children, his flocks of sheep and even his health. However, Job stayed loyal to his god, according to the Bible. My students couldn´t understand the end of Job´s first family and beasts because of a quarrel between God and the devil. From my respect to religion and my modest atheism, neither do I.

Things have changed a bit from my childhood. Less than half my students have been baptized, and if their grandparents or parents want them to prepare for their first holy communion, they have to bribe them at least with a good mobile phone, an iPad or a game console, when the children are less than ten years old. Neither those who were baptized nor the others give much thought to the point of believing or not in God, as we did. Basically, they don´t care about it. It is something that has nothing to do with their lives. It is not surprising that churches are now empty even on Sundays.

If I have to judge from what I have learnt and read, and from the point of view of my modest atheism, I would say that religion has been more harmful than anything else. Obviously, I am aware that, as a generalization, the sentence might be really unfair. Religion offers me nothing, but it is there. I have run into it once and again in the last few hours: first in the empty sentences of a tired and not highly motivated priest at a funeral I attended; later, on a folded piece of paper I found on a park bench. Somebody had handwritten and photocopied a short message informing me in this case about God’s existence and usefulness. Then, on a wall, a graffiti showing a triangle with God’s eye inside, seeing everything and keeping things under control, like in Job´s story, like in Big Brother. That graffiti made me look, finally, among my books, for a special one called Enciclopedia Álvarez, which belonged to one of my uncles. When he was a child, it was the only book students had got: all subjects in just one book beginning, of course, with religion. God appeared in that book as an eye inside a triangle, too, as you can see. It was the only book in my grandparents’ home at that village in the middle of nowhere.

El quadern gris - The Gray Notebook

Josep Pla: El quadern gris

I, quan ens tornem a trovar, no tenim res a dir-nos».

 Mi traducción a español:

Josep Pla: The Gray Notebook

Josep Pla’s The Gray Notebook is in Catalan narrative comparable to Natsume Souseki’s I am a Cat in Japan: a classic. Can you imagine someone in a Japanese library asking the librarian about Souseki’s book and finding out that they don´t know about it? Well, it has happened to me in a library of Barcelona. I had been looking for the book in the library for some time, so I finally decided to go to the librarian desk and make my question.

─Pla? The Gray Notebook? ─the librarían asked─ Is that a novel, poetry, a play?

Josep Pla wrote The Gray Notebook as a sort of diary set in the years 1918 and 1919, but he was working in it for many years until published in 1966. Is one of the few books of Catalan Literature I would heartily recommend to anyone who is fond of reading, because I think that it is really good.

A short piece here of the original text in Catalan:

I, quan ens tornem a trovar, no tenim res a dir-nos».

My translation into English:

“March, 21st: We have a strange habit in this country. When we meet someone in the street, two people face to face, we have nothing to say to each other. However, once we have said goodbye, after taking seven or eight steps, a good amount of things come to our heads that we have urgently to say to the person we have just left. Then, We call them in a loud voice, shouting and swinging spectacularly our arms. The other person answers back, of course, roaring and swinging their arms in the same way. Meanwhile, we had been walking away, so the distance to our talking partner gets longer and longer, so the conversation becomes a terrible mess. At the end, the distance is so long that it is almost impossible to hear anything at all. Then, somebody says with great effort:

Well, we´ll talk about it.

And the other one answers:

─Yes, yes. We´ll talk about it.

And when we meet again, we have nothing to say to each other”.

About that librarian, in a country with a 25% unemployment rate, how is it possible that someone like him has been able to get a job as a public employee?

Quién tiene razón? - Who is right?

Who is right?
Do you know that anecdote about Mendel and Berkowitch, who came to a rabbi to intervene in a dispute they had? The rabbi listened first to Mendel and said: You are right!. Then,  he listened to Berkowitch and judged: You are right, too! At the moment, from the kitchen of the house came the voice of the rabbis wife saying that it was not possible that both were right. Look, that is right, too! concluded the rabbi.

Conflicts from different parties. Who is right?

Has reason a role in conflict creation or the lust for power of those who lead human groups? Is the one who wins the one who is right? For the victims of a conflict, is there any comfort in being right?

The text at the beginning of the entry belongs to a novel I have been reading:  Isaacs Tora (Петокнижие Исааково) by the Bulgarian writer Angel Wagenstein (Анжел Вагенщайн).

Mamás - Mums

Mums

A journalist called Amaya Ascunce has written a book based on her own blog with about 100 pieces of advise her mother has been repeating to her since she was a child. It is called Cómo no ser una dramamamá (how to avoidbeing a hysterical mum). I think the book is great fun and, moreover, I have felt identified with it, because I suspect that many Spanish mums had ( and maybe still do) a little bit of hysteria regarding their children safety, as if an unavoidable tragedy was always going to happen. In her original blog, you can read all those advices in Spanish, but I cannot but comment the ones I have learnt the hard way, too.

1.    Before leaving home, switch off the gas and lock the door.
When we went somewhere by car, my mum made my father come back home halfway because she was not sure if she had switch off the gas or locked the door, or both.

2.    I bet you are to blame somehow.
If I complained for an unfair punishment at school. Nowadays, however, teachers are always to blame.

3.    Eating carrots is good for your sight.
I have been wearing glasses since I was seven and eating carrots for nothing; well, I end up believing that carrots had made grown my front teeth too long.

4.    Do you think this house is the Bank of Spain?
Whenever I asked my mother for money.

5.    After lunch, you have to wait for two hours before getting in the water.
Every summer, hours of boredom and heat after lunch, just because of another piece of nonsense.

6.    If you don´t eat it for dinner, then you´ll do it for breakfast.
Not in my case. I didn´t mind not having lunch or supper, or even breakfast next day or dinner again.

7.    If you don´t behave, the Three Holy Kings will bring you just coal for Christmas.
The Three Holy Kings give Spanish children Christmas presents on January 6th. Naughty children get just coal, but at the end of all that coal is made of sugar.

8.    If you swallow that piece of bubble gum, your bowels will get stuck together.
My innards had surely a non-stick coating, like many frying pans, because I always happened to swallow bubble gum, but I always had a hard time thinking what could happen, too.

9.    I will wash your mouth with soap.
A threat whenever your mum thought you had said something nasty, a curse word.

10. Drink up that orange juice quickly, or there won´t be any vitamins in it.
Such a stupid thing to become a neurotic of speed and efficiency, two things that
won´t allow you to enjoy life in a calm way.
