Guerras de banderas

«Los españoles son inflexibles, anárquicos y cainitas, incapaces de ponerse de acuerdo en nada» es una frase tópica que se puede leer y oír en muchos sitios. Es verdad que los tópicos suelen ser injustos, pero no es menos cierto que llevamos por lo menos dos siglos divididos en dos bandos nada moderados, que el siglo pasado tuvimos una guerra civil terrible que no hemos acabado de superar del todo y que han pasado más de dos meses desde las últimas elecciones sin que nuestros políticos de derechas e izquierdas hayan pactado un gobierno. Yo creo que no saben hacerlo, porque ningún gobierno democrático tuvo que hacerlo hasta ahora. Esa incapacidad para entenderse me la encontré yo el otro día en una fachada de Barcelona: cuatro banderas diferentes en el mismo sitio para el mismo país. De arriba a abajo y de izquierda a derecha:

　 a)   Bandera de la segunda república española. La utilizan los que piensan que España es su país pero rechazan la monarquía.

　 b)  Bandera catalana independentista socialista. La utilizan los que piensan que su país no es España, sino Cataluña, y además son comunistas. Algunos la utilizan porque piensan que es más guay, y no tienen ni idea (o no les importa)de lo que representa.

　 c)   Bandera española constitucionalista. La utilizan los que piensan que España ya está bien como está.

　d) Bandera catalana independentista. La utilizan los que quieren la independencia de Cataluña. Es la bandera de Cataluña de siempre con la estrella. Se dice que copiaron la estrella de la bandera de Cuba.

Como dice el proverbio español: «Cuando el río suena, agua lleva».

Flag wars

“Spaniards are ruthless, anarchic and Spain is country where it is easy for people to hate each other. Spaniards are unable to agree in anything”. That is a common place that anybody can read and hear in many places. It is true that commonplaces tend to be unfair, but it is also true that we Spaniards have been divided into two factions for at least two centuries, and that those faction’s main feature has not precisely been moderation at all. Moreover, last century we suffered a terrible civil war, which we have not totally got over. Finally, last elections were more than two months ago and our right-winged and left-winged politicians have still not been able to reach an agreement about a new government for this country. I believe they just don´t know how to do it, because no democratic government here needed to do it before. I recently found our people´s lack of skill to understand each other on the façade of a building in Barcelona: four different flags in the same place for the same country. From top to bottom and from left to right:

　a) Flag of the second Spanish republic. It is used by those who think that Spain is their country, but they don´t agree with monarchy.

   b)  Pro-independence socialist Catalan flag. It is used by those who think that Spain is not their country, but Catalonia. They are communist, too. Some use it, because they think it is cool, but they don´t know what it represents, or maybe they just don´t care about it.

    c)    Spanish constitutional flag. It is used by those who think that Spain is alright as it is.

    d)    Pro-independence Catalan flag. It is used by those who want independence for Catalonia. As a matter of fact, it is the same flag Catalonia has been using up to now, but with a star added. They say it was copied from the Cuban flag.

A Spanish proverb says: «Cuando el río suena, agua lleva» (When the river sounds, it is bringing water àThere is no smoke without fire).
