Soccer fanatics
In Spanish, we say you are “aficionado al fútbol” (a soccer fan), when you like soccer very much. You can also be “aficionado” to bullfights or throwing olive seeds with your mouth. The word “aficionado” has got a friendly meaning. It implies an activity that is not professional, something you are not an expert at and, at the end of all, something that is not very important.

It is a commonplace to say that soccer is very popular in Spain, mainly among men, although there are more and more women in soccer stadiums. I am afraid that many of them, both men and women, are more soccer fanatics than soccer fans. “Fanatic” is not a friendly term, because it implies radicalism, inflexibility, aggressiveness.

There are many people who use their link to a soccer team to identify themselves with a group against another one. Those end up seeing all around their favourite sport in absolute tribal terms (their team is just the best and the rest are just rubbish) and transmit their ways to see reality to their own children. What is worse, they use soccer as a way to escape from their own life, which they dislike,  and be a part of another one where everything is easy to understand (victory-defeat / the good-the evil). They don´t need there any compromise with their own future, their family´s or their friends´.

There are people who have to endure a three or four hour journey on a coach to watch a soccer game. And then back home. I don´t think they can be in a good shape to work on the next day. Others, as the one in the picture, make models of the cups their team has won in a successful season to show everybody how proud they are to be a part of it and attack those who are not a part of it. They say they do those things for “love for the colours” to indicate the love they feel for the colours on their favourite team´s shirt. I think that the sentence is too sweet. I would say they do it for pure fanaticism, and that there is quite a lot of aggressiveness against those who are not sharing that “love”. I would prefer those FC Barcelona fans who, last century, in the 20s, used to come to Barcelona with the excuse of watching a soccer game, but in fact they went to a whorehouse to have a bit of fun. When they went out, there was a blackboard outside with the result of the game and some added information to form a perfect alibi. I am not for marital infidelity, and I guess there were and there are some women who were and are perfectly happy with their husbands going out to soccer games on Sunday afternoons, but I would judge that human weakness in a more benevolent way than I do it with aggressiveness or fanaticism.

Soccer in this country has always been a political tool. In dictator Franco’s time, after the Second World War, when we were Europe´s lepers from a political point of view, Real Madrid FC was used by the government to show a nice image of that dictatorship. On the other hand, FC Barcelona has always been used to favour the cause of independentism in Catalonia, and now more than ever

Someone could conclude, in this case, that soccer is a show for people with poor educational standards and easy to be manipulated. Far from that, soccer is like religion, it contains more feeling than rationalism, so everyone can fall in that trap. May intellectuals have been and are soccer fans. Great books have been written on the subject, such as Eduardo Galeano´s El fútbol a sol y a sombra or Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch. There are soccer fanatics among low qualified workers and among university professors, too. A former student of mine, a brilliant girl, who has just begun a degree, told me recently that she was very happy with her new life at university and with almost every teacher. There was one, though, she didn´t like so much. He began his first lesson with these words:

“I am very fond of soccer. I support FC Barcelona, so on game days we will be finishing our lessons earlier than usual. If there are Real Madrid supporters over there, you’d better keep it for you. Otherwise, your marks will suffer”.

My opinion is that anyone saying those words does not deserve to be a teacher, even though he might not be talking seriously, but I doubt it.

FCバルセロナのスタジアムの芝 - Hierba del campo del FC Barcelona - Grass from FC Barcelona soccer field

Grass from FC Barcelona soccer field

Some of my students told me that it is possible to buy now grass from FCBarcelona soccer field at the florist near our school. It is true: “We have got grass from FC Barcelona. The champions’ grass”, is written on the sign of the florist window on the picture.

Soccer has taken somehow the role of religion here. In the past, many travelled to religious sites dressed as pilgrims to give their lives some emotion. Now, fans travel with their teams all over Europe dressed as clowns to feel something similar. Before, they had the saints’ relics, Now, we can buy soccer field grass. In the old days, it was a privilege to be buried in the grounds of an important cathedral. Now, it is possible that your ashes will rest in the columbarium of your favourite stadium, such as FC Barcelona’s. Before, there were religion wars. Now, we have got the Champions League.

Football takes up a central part of many people’s lives. Here in Barcelona, there are two sport newspapers dealing almost exclusively with FC Barcelona: Sport and Mundo Deportivo; a TV station for FC Barcelona: Barça TV, and dozens of radio and TV programmes about the club latest news. And in Madrid, it is just the same with Real Madrid FC.
I don´t know if the soccer show is really harmless. Somehow, I find suspicious the anesthetic and anxiolytic effects of soccer on fans, who prefer directing their frustrations on the other team’s fans or the referee to thinking about the causes of their difficulties to get a decent job, their problems with the banks voracity or the broken promises of the politicians in power.

Deporte, la nueva religión - Sport, a new religion

Sport, a new religión

A discussion between two of my students, one of them a Madrid FC supporter and the other a FC Barcelona one, about who the best soccer player in the world is (Cristinano Ronaldo or Messi), reminds me of another discussion I witnessed forty years ago between two old angry prigs who tried to decide if it was better to pray to Our Lady of Pilar in Zaragoza or the village patron, Saint Blas. As if they both (the holy ones and the soccer players) cared a bit about that and them. Many sport fans, however, watch sport with a passion and fervour which could only be compared to the ones their grandparents showed at religious rituals. Many supporters watch the games on TV, the replays on their team’s channel and buy or download from the internet the most important ones to watch them all over again.

Three years ago, the day after a game Barça vs. Real Madrid ending 5-0, I was on a city bus. The driver was listening at full volume to the radio recording of the previous day’s game. He didn´t seem to care much about the passengers who could be on the loser’s side. In the way some fans live soccer, victory of defeat have a meaning which goes farther than joy or grief. Some wives know well, that they don´t need to prepare dinner for their husbands, when their team is severely beaten, because they will not have any. On the other hand, it is common knowledge that after a team has had a very successful soccer season, the birth rate goes dramatically up in the area. I know Barça supporters who confess that they suffer watching their team’s games, even when it is defeating their rivals easily. I guess the other team´s supporters may suffer much more, seeing their team with no chance even to touch the ball and whose winning possibilities are zero. The ecstasy of victory will make you feel you are a part of the best and will make up for all your sufferings. And if your team loses, no big deal, there is another game in two days.

It is not advisable for a teacher to support any team. And if they do, it is not advisable to tell anyone about it. I enjoy watching sport, not so much as I used to, but I still do, but only if I think the game is worth. Otherwise, I just switch of. As it happens with any other sport viewers, however I keep some games in my memory. I remember a soccer game I watched black and white in 1977, Spain beat Yugoslavia 0-1 in Belgrade. That victory meant that the Spanish soccer team, after 12 years, could take part in a World Cup. I remember that and that someone from the crowd threw a glass bottle at a Spanish player’s head. His name was Juanito, because he had made the sign of defeat to the crowd at being replaced. A very impolite gest, indeed, I mean from the footballer. I remember the epic comeback of Liverpool vs. AC Milán at the finals of the 2004-2005 Champions League, too; but if I had to choose one game, I would watch again and again a baseball game: Sagakita vs. Koryo students at the finals of the 2007 Baseball Highschool Competition. That was a real comeback, because experience tells us that something like that can only happen in sport and just a few times.

“Which team do you prefer?”, some ask to be sociable, or maybe to know if you belong to their faith or the enemy’s. My students make the same question. How could it be different?

─Prof ─they ask ─what is your favourite team?
─Sagan Tosu. first league in Japan.
─Come on! One of the teams from here!
─FC St. Pauli, second German league.

They leave me alone. If you don´t like Barça or Real Madrid, you must be from another planet.
