Tofu en Barcelona - Tofu in Barcelona

Tofu in Barcelona

There is a shop in the downtown area (Tofu catalán), where they make and sell tofu, which is not only tasty, but tastier than tasty. Apart from different sorts of tofu, they are specialized in soybean products; for instance a soy milk which is dense, fragrant and delicious.

Moreover, you can buy bento lunch boxes, Japanese homemade food to take away (about 8 euros), you can have a cup of hot miso soup, you can purchase some Japanese products and you can even order sushi to take away.

The timetable is quite Spanish (from Monday to Friday 11:30 to 15:00 and 17:00 to 20:00) except on Saturday, when the shop is open just from 11:00 to 15:00.
Tofu can easily be found in Barcelona at many Chinese food stores, where it is cheaper.

You can find more expensive tofu in health food stores, where it is  considered almost a miracle food, or even in some supermarkets, where tofu made in Spain is sold. However, the tofu you can buy at this Japanese shop is not only tasty; it is also cheap, because it is sold at a bit more than two euros a piece.

Cutre

Cutre

¿Alguna idea?

Cutre (seedy)

Some of my students brought me yesterday an advertising brochure they had taken from a supermarket with “traditional” Asian food products. The title said: “Do you dare?” There were two pages with Japanese products, too. I found it a bit “cutre”.

Something is “cutre”, when it gives you a negative impression because it is poorly or carelessly done or it has a low quality standard: clothes, a bar… Anything and anyone can be “cutre”, but the main point is that something will be “cutre” if the one who did it or made it didn´t put any effort to make it better, Maybe the targeted people cannot make any difference between what is “cutre” and what is not, or maybe they just don´t care. Another possibility is that some people feel attracted by “cutre” things, because some find them attractive, too. An example of this could be a song (“Voy a ser mama”) from 1983 criticising anti-abortion positions by Pedro Almodóvar, then a young man and now a worldwide famous movie director. Almodóvar used “cutre” aesthetics, because he was well aware that it provoked in some people both attraction and repulsion.

I think that the concept of “cutre” is both Spanish and universal. There is an idea of “cutre” which has a lot to do with a sensibility against embarrassing situations, which is too high in many Spaniards and differentiates us from other European citizens. They can keep relaxed in shorts with a flower pattern, fluorescent coloured shirts and sandals with socks up to their knees. Well, most of us simply can’t. We would love to be that brave and we envy them, no doubt. However, the perception of what is “cutre” can be found anywhere. Not so long ago, I received by mail an advertising brochure from a Japanese supermarket chain with a section dedicated to “traditional” products of the Spanish cuisine.

I don´t know how to say “cutre” in Japanese. Any ideas?

Pipas - Sunflower Seeds

Pipas

Sunflower seeds

Sunflower seeds were for a long time probably the main characters, the stars, of what we used to call golosinas or chucherías and now we call chuches: products people eat between meals just for pleasure, something like Japanese okashi, although chuches are mainly children’s or teenagers’ favourites and are considered mainly sweet products, not salty ones.

Sunflower seeds have always had a social role, because it was really usual (and still is in many Spanish places) to sit outdoors on some chairs taken out from home or on a bench and leave the ground littered with a layer of sunflower seeds hulls. And meanwhile, to practice one of the best loved traditional hobbies in Spain: to let time flow, looking at the people passing by and gossiping a bit about everything and everyone.

Sunflower seeds, when I was a child, were consumed at cinemas as popcorn is today. And the hulls ended up on the floor. Street bins and not littering the streets are more modern concepts than you may think in this country. Cinema sessions were double: a bad movie and a worse one, and we would sit in the gallery to eat sunflower seeds and drop the hulls on the people sitting in the stalls.

Sunflower seeds came from America in the 17th century, but eating them as a social habit came much later, at the Madrid siege during the Spanish Civil War at the end of the 30s, in the 20th century. Russian soldiers brought it to Spain, but then people didn´t do it for fun, but for lack of food. Apart from that, for many people it was a way to identify themselves with ideologies such as communism or anarchism; and for women it was a sign of their liberation process, because then women eating in public places were bad considered.

Sunflower seeds are an effective tranquiliser. Most sunflower seed eaters do it because it is sedating for them to repeat the  gesture of putting one of those seeds in their mouth or set it between their teeth, cracking it, spitting the hulls and chewing the rest. All the other miraculous effects on our health that can be found in the internet offer to me the same credibility as anything you can find in there. Anyway, we eat them roasted and salted, and if you eat a lot of them, you are going to eat lots of salt. And that cannot be good.

Some prefer sunflower seeds with a bit of salt (I am one of them), but others prefer salted ones, which are of course much more saltier: they like that feeling of their lips getting like sausages because of the salt crystals on them. Se lo pasan pipa¸ which means, they have a really good time.

Tomates - Tomatoes

Tomates

Tomatoes

When my grandfather and later my father had a vegetable garden, I loved tomatoes. Later, little by little, I ended up not eating any. As in the case of other fruits and vegetables, the better they looked, the worse they tasted. They grow them in greenhouses, it is possible to buy them throughout the year, they last for a long time, they have got perfect colour and no imperfections. However, they taste invariably like a piece of cardboard. At the moment a kilo costs one dollar or less, and if they are on special offer, two kilos cost one and a half dollars.

It is possible to find tasty tomatoes now. There are two examples on the second picture. The one on the left is a piece of the so called bullock heart variety and the ones on the right are raf tomatoes. Prices are of course much higher. I usually buy a tasty bullock heart tomato for a bit less than three dollars a kilo. Even so, a specific tomato variety does not guarantee good taste. A tasty variety that was not left until ripe on the tomato plant and is preserved refrigerated will taste like cardboard like others, so you must just know where to buy them.

If you have got the chance to find good tomatoes, I think that the best way to eat them is chopping them in slices and adding a dash of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt.

Un perro verde - A green dog

«Es más raro que un perro verde»

Perro
«¡Qué perro que es Miguel! »

ところが、女性がPerra(Perroの女性名詞)だと、「娼婦」を意味する。
例:
Me trató como a un perro.

Me trató como a una perra.

A otro perro con ese hueso

A perro flaco, todo son pulgas

Son como el perro y el gato

He pasado una noche de perros

Perro ladrador, poco mordedor

Si no voy a trabajar mañana, mi jefe me va a echar los perros

¿Los políticos? Son los mismos perros con distinto collar
Perro no come carne de perro

Estoy como un perro con dos colas

tos de perro

No quiero perro con cencerro

Morir como un perro

¡Que perra vida!

è «He pasado una noche de perros»: (no he podido dormir).
è «Si no voy a trabajar mañana, mi jefe me va a echar los perros»: (mi jefe me va a hacer algo malo).

90. A green dog

When somebody is or behaves in a very different way others do, some people say in Spanish: “He/she is stranger than a green dog” (stranger than a pink gorilla).

Because there aren´t many green dogs, but this weekend I have found a bottle of Rueda wine that looks great with that name. And it costs a bit more than $11,

There are many other idioms and proverbs related to dogs:

àAs in many other traditional sentences with animals, Spanish treats worse women than men. «¡Qué perro que es Miguel! » (Miguel is very lazy). However, if we say that a woman is «una perra» (a bitch), we are calling her “slut”. If we say that someone treated us as a dog, “me trató como a un perro”: (I was ill treated); But “me trató como a una perra”: (I was treated as a slut).
è «A otro perro con ese hueso»: (give that bone to another dog) à I know you are pulling my leg. .
è «A perro flaco, todo son pulgas»: (if a dog is thin, fleas thrive on it) à when somebody gets weak, many bad things happen to them. It never rains but pours!
è «Son como el perro y el gato»: (they get along like dogs and cats)à they are fighting all the time.
è «He pasado una noche de perros»: (I had a horrible night, I couldn´t sleep at all).
è «Perro ladrador, poco mordedor»: (A dogs that barks never bites).
è «Si no voy a trabajar mañana, mi jefe me va a echar los perros»: (If I don´t go to work tomorrow, my boss is going to give me a hard time) When a bullfight was not wild enough on the arena, in the old times, they let aggressive dogs attack it, so it got angrier.
They are all the same dogs with different collars)à no real differences among them.
è «Perro no come carne de perro»: (dog does not eat dog) à people with similar jobs or interests do on attack each other. This sentence existed in classical Latin, yet.
I feel like a dog with two tails) à I feel very happy.
è “tos de perro”: a deep cough, like bronchitis cough.
è There is a sentence that almost nobody says anymore, but I like it because a character from Don Quijote (the most famous Spanish novel) says. Sancho Panza, Don Quijote´s servant and friend and a very practical man, says: «No quiero perro con cencerro»: (I don´t want dogs with cowbells (something seems to be good for me, but I don´t want it, because in fact it has far more drawbacks than advantages).
è And finally “morir como un perro”: (to die like a dog) àto suffer a horrible death.

Well, I must end here. Tomorrow is Monday and I have to get up early. ¡Que perra vida! à This bitch of a life!.

Quiero ser un pollo a l'ast - I want to be a roasted chicken

Pollos a l'ast

Me hizo mucha gracia.

─No sé ─dijo─.

I want to be a roasted chicken

This school year is almost finished. There are still some things left to do in June such final exams, graduation ceremonies, our sport day… and at the end of it all, the final school reports. This is a special time especially for our 4th year secondary school students, because they are going to leave our school, where  most of them have been spending their school days since they were three or four years old.

Yesterday I was talking on the corridor with one of these students. Now he must be 15 or 16. His grades are quite good, but he, as many others, seems to be unable to live out of the present. Maybe these students are still a bit immature, or maybe they cannot see anything pleasant in the future our society is offering to young people like them, coming from lower middle class or low class families. The unemployment rate for young people in this country is 55%. I asked him what he was going to study, what he wanted to be. His face suddenly lit up and he said:

─I want to be a roasted chicken.

I found it very funny. He had obviously said the very first thing that had entered his head. Most teenagers I know are like that. However, he had unconsciously made an interesting allegory about our educative system and the employment prospects for most of our young people.

Have a look at the photo. We put individuals close together on a row, we coat them with some fat, and we make them turn continuously on a vertical spit until they get crispy, technically ready to be sold to anyone hungry and with a bit of money, someone who does not feel like cooking, who will bring one or two of them home to enjoy the meat and throw the rest away in the bin.

The same visualization I had found so funny became a bit bitter just after some seconds. My student’s face darkened, too.

─I don´t know ─he said─ I don´t know what I want to be. Everybody is making the same question, but I have no idea.

Thank you for reading.

Más ramen - More ramen

「Paris bien vale una misa(努力する価値はある)」

More ramen
It is a common opinion in this country that there are not really four year seasons. People say Spaniards live every year six months in winter and six months in hell. We change very quickly from winter’s cold to summer’s heat. This spring is not very usual, because we have both good weather days and then others that happen to be windy, rainy and unpleasant. On those days, the best thing to do is going somewhere to have a bowl of ramen. In Barcelona, the only good place for ramen I know is Ramen-ya Hiro.

Ramen-ya Hiro is fortunately still in the same place, and the only different thing I saw since the last time we went there is the queue, which is longer: people waiting  in front of the place with face of being annoyed but at the same time determined not to leave the place until they get what they came for. Such a queue may be the best advert for the place, but does it matter much when you have just arrived and have to be last standing? Luckily for us, nobody seemed to want to sit outside at the only free table, because of the bad weather, so we asked if it was free and just sat there. It was windy and a bit cold out there and I knocked over a good part of my beer on a chair. Moreover, I prefer homemade gyoza, but that seafood ramen I had was really good and it was real ramen. A bit of cold weather? Well, as the proverb says: «The juice was worth the squeeze».

Churros para desayunar - Churros for breakfast

Desayunar churros

Churros for breakfast

Springtime is the most pleasant part of the year in Barcelona: sunny days with beautiful blue skies and temperatures over 68ºF make you want to be out in the street. Today was an exception: at daybreak the sky was lead-coloured, the air was cold and the streets were wet with rain; so I got out early to buy some in order to have a breakfast of churros with hot chocolate.

Churros are made with a dough of wheat flour, water and salt, which is introduced into a special cylindrical device called churrera with a star-shaped hole. The dough goes through this hole in the form of a long star-shaped tube that is fried in very hot oil. Then, it is cut into pieces, which are sprinkled with sugar. When I was a child, churros were shaped like a lace in order to be tied with a piece of reed by the dozen. Street churros vendors just shouted what they had in the early morning, and customers shouted their orders back from windows or balconies and they got their breakfast just at their doors.

My mother, among many others, was not for purchasing out what she thought she could make at home, so she bought a small churrera. A bad choice. It happened as with chips. Churros or chips made in a churreria could beat anything you made at home.

Nowadays, churros are not so popular anymore, except among all life fans, young people coming back home at dawn after having fun all night long and some children; because many people wrinkle their noses when they see the typical yellow paper bag full of churros with lots of greasy spots on the outside. However, it could seem inconsistent that some of the same people do love eating in hamburger chain shops whose food, at the end of all, is based in mixing two of the classical ingredients of churros: fat and sugar.
