日本最大級の活火山、阿蘇 - Aso: el volcán activo más grande de Japón - The biggest active volcano in Japan

僕は日本を何度も訪れているわけじゃないから、まだ行ったことのない場所がたくさんある。だから、行ってみてびっくりした場所もいくつかある。つい最近、阿蘇山を訪れる機会に恵まれた。九州の熊本県にある、日本最大級の活火山だ。

阿蘇山にアクセスする道路からして、すでにうれしいサプライズが待っていた。視界に広がるのは、南北２４km、東西１８km、外周１２０kmの楕円形をしたカルデラ。明るい緑色のマントに覆われた山々が、鮮やかな緑色に染まる夏の田んぼをぐるっと囲んでいる。まさに世界最大級のカルデラだ。

高原の中央部には、１５００メートル級の連峰がそびえている。そのひとつである中岳は火山で、バスでアクセスできる。火口まではロープウェーか有料道路が利用できる。もくもくと立ち上る煙が厚い雲を形成していて、峰から火口を観察できる。この煙は呼吸器系の疾患を持つ人にとっては有害らしい。火山活動の急な増加に備えて、コンクリート製の小さな避難所もいくつか設置されている。

夏の景色はいろんな意味で壮観だ。火口を横目に、山独特の果てしない緑の風景が広がる。濃い霧で一瞬見えなくなった風景は、太陽が霧を散らすと再び現れ、秒ごとにそのトーンを変えていく。夕暮れと夜明けにもまた違う姿を見せてくれる。

中岳を下りていくと、登りの時にたちこめていた霧が晴れたおかげで、心行くまで風景を堪能できた。草原で草を食む牛や馬。少し下ったところには、魅力的な形をしたこぶりの火砕丘、米塚が見える。谷底には、日本で有数の由緒ある古神社、阿蘇神社がある。２０００年もの間この地とゆかりを持ち続けている神社で、境内には縁結びと伝えられる松がある。

阿蘇山にはもちろん温泉もある。日本には温泉がたくさんあり、温泉ファンも多い。

日が暮れて、ホテルの部屋から裏庭を眺めていると、日焼けしないように頭のてっぺんからつま先までを覆った高齢者たちが、ゴルフに似たスポーツを楽しんでいた。

Aso: el mayor volcán en activo de Japón.

Como he visitado Japón pocas veces, hay muchos lugares que no conozco y que son realmente sorprendentes. Recientemente pude visitar el volcán Aso, el volcán en activo más grande de Japón en la prefectura de Kumamoto, en Kyushu.

La carretera de acceso ya me ofreció la primera sorpresa agradable: un valle de 24 por 18 quilómetros de ancho y 120 de circunferencia. Se podía apreciar el verde vivo de los campos de arroz en verano rodeado de montañas cubiertas de un manto vegetal verde claro: una de las calderas volcánicas más grandes del mundo.  

En el centro de la llanura hay varios picos de unos 1500 metros de altura, entre ellos el volcán en activo Nakadake, al cual se puede llegar en autobús y luego en teleférico o por carretera de pago. Una densa nube de vapores puede observarse desde la cresta del cráter del volcán, vapores potencialmente peligrosos para personas con problemas respiratorios. Hay pequeños bunquers de protección alrededor del observatorio en previsión de un aumento repentino de la actividad volcánica.

La panorámica en verano es, sin duda, espectacular, a un lado y al otro: el cráter a un lado y al otro, la profundidad de unos paisajes de montaña únicos en infinidad de tonalidades de verde, que pueden desaparecer en solo unos minutos cubiertos por una densa niebla o cambiar de tonalidad segundo a segundo cuando el sol deshace la niebla en jirones, con el crepúsculo o al amanecer.

Bajando del pico Nakadake, una vez disipada la niebla que hizo imposible ver nada del paisaje en la subida, se puede disfrutar de infinidad de prados donde pacen vacas y algunos caballos. Un poco más abajo hay un pequeño cono volcánico de forma muy atractiva (Komezuka) y, abajo del todo en el valle, se puede visitar uno de los templos shintoístas más antiguos y famosos, el santuario de Aso, que ha existido de una u otra forma durante unos dos mil años y alberga un pino que dicen que propicia los matrimonios afortunados.

En un paisaje volcánico como el de Aso tampoco pueden faltar los establecimientos de fuentes termales, tan abundantes en Japón y con tantos aficionados.

Al caer la tarde, detrás del hotel, un grupo de ancianos, tapados de cabeza a pies para protegerse del sol, se entretenía en un prado jugando animadamente a algo parecido al golf.

Aso: Japan´s biggest active volcano

I have visited Japan just a few times, so there are many places I have never heard of who are really breathtaking. Recently, I could visit Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan, in Kumamoto prefecture, in Kyushu.

The access road offered me the first pleasant surprise: a valley 24 x 18 kilometres wide  with a circumference of about 120. I could appreciate the deep green of the rice fields in summer, surrounded by mountains covered by light green vegetation: one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world.

On the central plateau, there are different peaks, including the active Nakadake (about 1500 m. high). You can reach Nakadake by bus and then cableway or by toll road. A dense cloud of rising fumes can be observed from the summit viewing points. Those fumes are potentially dangerous for people with breathing problems. There are small bunkers all around, because a sudden increase of volcanic activity is possible.

The summer view is undoubtedly spectacular, both if you are looking at the crater or you turn around to see those unique mountain landscapes in endless green tones, which can suddenly be taken from you in a few minutes when a deep fog covers all around or change its colour tone second by second when the suns tears the fog apart, during sunset or at sunrise.

Coming down from Nakadake peak, once the fog which covered everything while getting up had disappeared, it was possible to enjoy endless green meadows, grazing land for a good amount of cows and some horses. Following the road, there is a beautifully shaped volcanic cone (Komezuka) and down under, at the bottom of the valley you can find one of the oldest and best-known Shinto shrines in Japan. Aso Shrine has existed in one way or another for about two thousand years and hosts a famous pine tree which is said to favour lucky marriages.

In a volcanic landscape such as Aso hotspring resorts are obviously easy to find, as in many other places in Japan and with similar good fortune in visitors.

At sunset, behind the hotel, a group of elderly people, covered from head to toes to fight the sun, enjoyed on a meadow an animated game o something similar to golf.
