Elecciones generales - General Election

Elecciones generales 2015

General election 2015
If politics was not such a serious matter, if it didn’t affect so much our health, our children’s education and our future, I would say that the only thing our politicians can aspire to is making us smile.

Respeto - Respect

Respeto

Respect
I think that many of the teenagers I am working with have a too high opinion of themselves, their friends, families, the city where they live or this country. As if all of them were essential for this planet to keep on moving. Many of the adults I know also show a similar attitude. The most direct consequence of that overrating their own things is a certain inability to tolerate or respect others, and that is, as I see it, one of the biggest flaws of Spanish society.

It is true that we have got many good things in Spain, but a bit of self-criticism would do a lot to improve things here, because, if we think we are so amazing, what is the point in changing to improve? I ask my students, for instance, if our educational system is that good, how come there are no Spanish university among the 200 best rated in the world?  If our health system is so good, why are there waiting lists for surgery for over two years or more? If this is such a rich country why the unemployment rate is over 25%?

I think that a bit of humility would be good for us. For example, last month there was a tennis round of the Davis Cup in Siberia: Russia vs. Spain. Even though the best Spanish players could not (or would not) participate, the ranking of those who went were much over the ranking of the Russian players. However, the Russian players took advantage of the fact that they were playing at home and got a well deserved victory. Defeat caused a lot of unjustified criticism against the Spanish players, but I think they did their best to win. Have a look at these tweets:

Hater picks
I know 80-year-old ladies who can serve a ball better than Marc López Tarrés.
(He had played the doubles match with David Marrero as a partner)

David Marrero
I´ll just say thank you to be there every single moment. Those who are cursing me and Marc López: you can go and eat shit.

How is it possible such a lack of respect from Hater Picks towards a tennis player? Would that man be able to perform better than him on the court? But above all, Marrero´s answer is improper. What kind of image is he giving of the team he has played with, saying that those who don´t agree with their performance should “go and eat shit”?

Another example. I recently got stuck in a traffic jam at the morning rush hour, so I decided to turn on the radio and take it easy. Suddenly, I heard a horn coming from the car behind mine. I looked at the rear-view mirror and saw the driver in the car behind moving his arms as if he was very angry, and sounding his horn. I realized I was responsible for his anger, because, when the car in front of me began moving on, I took it easy and not moved on immediately. What for, if I would have to stop just a few yards ahead? It seemed that the driver in the car behind got crazy because I was not just behind the car in front of me every single second. Maybe he was in a hurry, or maybe he had had an argument with his couple at breakfast, but I decided just to ignore him and keep calm. He ended up a bit exasperated and changed lane into the one reserved to taxis and buses, where he could finally speed, taking the risk of being fined.

I don´t blame a good amount of my students for looking egoist, egotist, ill-mannered and disrespectful. I am afraid that they have learnt all that from some of us, adults.

He vuelto - I´m back

I cannot have my entries translated into Japanese right now, so from now and on these texts will be only be available in Spanish and English. If there is anyone interested in translating them into Japanese, I would be very thankful.

Pintadas

Pintadas

Pintadas

“Pintada” in Spanish is usually a sentence painted on a wall. Mostly, an anonymous way to protest against something. Spaniards call “graffiti” to those paintings (more or less artistic) decorating some walls or to those tags some disgusting people make on every wall they can, except on their own home´s walls, of course.

I found this “pintada” a short time ago. It caught my eye because the sentence makes no sense. However, it not difficult to find it: “If life turns its back on you, touch its bottom”.

“Dar la espalda” means “turn your back on somebody”. I think the sentence means that even though life sometimes brings us unpleasant things, we should try to get something positive out of the negative situation.

In fact, I do not know why they painted that twisted sentence on the wall. Maybe they just wanted to be funny.

You can find a song in the internet with that title, but I don´t think there is anything good in it.

Religión - Religion

Religion

When I was a child, I used to spend summers at a village situated on a small hill of a high plateau, in the middle of nowhere. As expected, the most important building in the village was situated on top of the hill: the church. On Sundays, as the other five children in the village, I was an altar boy, that is to say, I helped the priest at mass. There was a dairy mass, but it was just attended by a few old women, so we were not needed, then. However, the church was full on Sundays, if only because nobody wanted to be the subject of others´ gossip. Religion was a social issue, not a spiritual one, but compliance with the rites was not a point for discussion.

Nowadays everything is different. During the end of this school year, we read in a text a reference to the biblical story of Job, which no student had heard about, so I explained it somehow. The devil told God that his servant Job was loyal to his god because things were going really well for him, so God let the devil kill Job´s children, his flocks of sheep and even his health. However, Job stayed loyal to his god, according to the Bible. My students couldn´t understand the end of Job´s first family and beasts because of a quarrel between God and the devil. From my respect to religion and my modest atheism, neither do I.

Things have changed a bit from my childhood. Less than half my students have been baptized, and if their grandparents or parents want them to prepare for their first holy communion, they have to bribe them at least with a good mobile phone, an iPad or a game console, when the children are less than ten years old. Neither those who were baptized nor the others give much thought to the point of believing or not in God, as we did. Basically, they don´t care about it. It is something that has nothing to do with their lives. It is not surprising that churches are now empty even on Sundays.

If I have to judge from what I have learnt and read, and from the point of view of my modest atheism, I would say that religion has been more harmful than anything else. Obviously, I am aware that, as a generalization, the sentence might be really unfair. Religion offers me nothing, but it is there. I have run into it once and again in the last few hours: first in the empty sentences of a tired and not highly motivated priest at a funeral I attended; later, on a folded piece of paper I found on a park bench. Somebody had handwritten and photocopied a short message informing me in this case about God’s existence and usefulness. Then, on a wall, a graffiti showing a triangle with God’s eye inside, seeing everything and keeping things under control, like in Job´s story, like in Big Brother. That graffiti made me look, finally, among my books, for a special one called Enciclopedia Álvarez, which belonged to one of my uncles. When he was a child, it was the only book students had got: all subjects in just one book beginning, of course, with religion. God appeared in that book as an eye inside a triangle, too, as you can see. It was the only book in my grandparents’ home at that village in the middle of nowhere.

Qué suerte! - How lucky

Has tenido suerte ─me ha dicho ─.

How lucky!

Last night some vandals were having fun with my car’s number plate. They bent it and kicked it until the white paint coat around the numbers fell off.

I had to have it replaced so I went to the mechanic´s.

─Just the plate number? How lucky ─he has told me ─. After the weekend… They do worse things to cars than just ruining a number plate.

I am lucky to live in a country with so tolerant, respectful, peaceful, calm and hospitable people.

Fin de curso - End of the school year

End of the schoolyear

Now, when the schoolyear is almost over, I take to think about this society and my job. I have the impression that what we call the welfare state, which we have been enjoying in Spain just for about 30 years, since we are in the EU, is quickly dissolving. They say the only way to keep our economics going in the right way would precisely be putting an end to the state protection on citizens: pensions, unemployment subsidies, spending money on the weaker. Well, that protection has been a good part of the European dream and the reason for many to belong to it and, if that dream cannot exist, I seriously doubt that Europe can do it.

They say young Europeans will probably have much harder lives than ours. Well, that piece of news doesn´t seem to have arrived to Spanish schools. Our inclusive school model is so tolerant, that we are even talking of doing away with exams, just in case that somebody could fail them and feel frustrated, in a society which is getting more and more competitive and pitiless. I am not really sure that we are preparing our people for the future as we should do.
