チノ地区 - El Barrio Chino

バルセロナの中心地、ランブラス通りと劇場が集中するパラレイ通りの間に位置するかつての「チノ地区（Barrio Chino）」は、現在「ラバル地区」と呼ばれている。

僕が初めてこの一帯を訪れた時は、まだチノ地区と呼ばれていた。この地名がついたのは、チノ（中国人）がたくさんいたからではない。チノ地区といえば、僕の祖父が言っていたような場所、つまり、「女の人が通りでタバコをすっていて、人を『tú』（親しい人に使う２人称）で呼ぶような場所」である。狭い通りに古い建物がひしめく貧民街で、清潔という言葉とはほど遠い場所。とくに夜がふけると危険な空気に包まれる。バルやレストランがにぎわう時間帯になると、売春婦たちが通りに出て客を引き、下水道の排水溝はスリが中身を抜いた空の財布やバッグで詰まりはじめる。ありとあらゆるドラッグの売人が現れ、えせアーティストが腕前をひけらかす。当時はちょうどVHSビデオが流行っていた時期で、通りでは最新モデルのビデオデッキが売られていた。立派な箱に入っているのに値段は格安で、中を見るとレンガが入っていたものだった。

そして１９９２年、バルセロナ五輪がやってきた。従来のイメージを払拭し、近代的、効率的、ヨーロッパ的で、醜くない都市づくりを目指す政治家たちにとって、チノ地区はまさしく邪魔者だった。そこで、怪しげな連中を追い出すことにした。ついでに、最高の立地条件を備えたこの場所に住宅や設備を建設し金儲けすることも忘れなかった。現在、ここはあやしいセンスの近代的な建物と、昔ながらのお粗末な古い建物が混在する地区と化した。多くの古い建物には世界中からの移民が住居を構え、商売を営み、この一帯に新たな空気を作り出している。スペインにはこうした中途半端で短期的な都市計画の産物があちこちに存在する。

この辺りに長く住んでいたコミック作家、イバー（Ivá）は、１９９２年前後に最高のキャラクターを生み出した。「最後のコソドロナイフ」ことマキ・ナバハ（Maki Navaja, «el último choriso»）だ。マキ・ナバハは、一部の人々にとって、この地区のアイコン的存在となったのだった。

El Barrio Chino 

Ahora el barrio se llama «Raval», y está situado en el centro de Barcelona, entre las Ramblas y el Paralelo, que era y es la avenida de la mayoría de espectáculos teatrales de la ciudad. 

Yo lo conocí como «Barrio Chino», aunque no había allí muchas personas chinas. Cuando decíamos el nombre, pensábamos en el barrio, como decía mi abuelo, «donde hay señoras fumando en la calle y que te tratan de tú». Era el barrio más sórdido del centro con edificios viejos y calles estrechas, nunca demasiado limpio y siempre con una cierto peligro especialmente por las noches, cuando empezaba la vida nocturna para bares y restaurantes, salían las prostitutas a buscar sus clientes en la calle, los carteristas empezaban su labor diaria de atascar  los sumideros de las cloacas con las carteras y bolsos vacíos que habían robado, aparecían vendedores de todo tipo de drogas y los artistas del timo demostraban sus habilidades. En esa época, en que se puso de moda el vídeo VHS, se vendían en la calle aparatos de vídeo de último modelo en cajas flamantes por poco dinero, pero en el interior de las cajas solo había unos cuantos ladrillos. 

Y llegaron las olimpiadas del 92. Y la visión de todas esas miserias molestaba a una clase política ocupada en dar otra imagen de Barcelona, más moderna, más eficiente, más europea y menos fea. Así que la cuestión era echar a toda esa gente y, de paso, hacer buen negocio construyendo viviendas y equipamientos en una zona con una situación inmejorable. Ahora el barrio es un híbrido de edificios modernos de gusto dudoso y los antiguos edificios cutres de siempre que han ocupado en gran parte inmigrantes de muchos sitios, cuyos pequeños comercios han dado nueva vida al barrio. Como tantas cosas en este país, parece el producto de la planificación a corto plazo que se ha acabado dejando a medias.

Un dibujante de cómics, Ivá, que vivió en el barrio durante mucho tiempo, creó en esa época, alrededor de 1992, un personaje genial que se convirtió en icono de lo que era el barrio para algunos: Maki Navaja, «el último choriso».

El Barrio Chino

Now the district is called «Raval». It is situated between Ramblas and Paralelo, an avenue which was and still is the place to go if you want to see a theater show in Barcelona.

When I knew the place, it was called «Barrio Chino», although there were not many Chinese there. When we said the expression it meant redlight district.

It was a seedy neighbourhood, the worst in the city centre, with old buildings and narrow streets, never too clean and ever dangerous somehow, especially in the evenings, when night life began for bars and restaurants, when the whores were on the streets looking for customers, when the pickpockets began their daily labour of blocking the sewer drains with the wallets and bags they had stolen and wanted to disappear. Then, the drug-pushers appeared and the swindlers showed their tricks. Back then, VHS video players were in fashion. They sold in the street the latest VHS Video model in smart cardboards boxes for a very low price, but inside the boxes there were just a few bricks.  

And then came the Games, in 1992. And the sight of such miseries disturbed all those politicians who were busy trying to give a completely different image of Barcelona, much more modern, more efficient, more European and less ugly. So the thing was to get all those people out of the neighbourhood and, at the same time, make some money building flats and city equipments in an area just in the city centre. Now the district is a mixture of modern buildings of dubious taste and the same old seedy buildings where now you can find mainly immigrants from many places, whose little shops have given the neighobourhood a new life. As many other things in this country, the place seems the product of short-time planning which was left half done.

A comic book artist, Ivá, who lived in the neighbourhood for a long time, created around 1992 a brilliant comic character who became the iconic image of the place for some of us: Maki Navaja, «el último choriso» (Maki, the Knife, the last petty thief).
