ついこの間、もう何十年も前にやっていたアニメ番組に関する本が偶然手に入った。ギジェム・メディナという漫画家が書いたもので、題名は「Abuelito, dime tú （教えて、おじいさん）」。「アルプスの少女ハイジ」スペイン語版の主題歌の歌詞は、このフレーズで始まっていた。

テレビも他のものと同様、先進諸国から少し遅れてスペインに広まった。１９７０年代の終わりごろまで、僕の家には白黒テレビ（写真参照）があった。壊れるまではこのテレビで、たったひとつしかないチャンネルを観ていた。その後チャンネルが１つ追加されたが、両方とも国営だった。当時の家電製品には、一定の使用期間が過ぎると壊れるようプログラムされたチップなどはめこまれていなかったから、たとえば冷蔵庫を買えば、それは人の半生くらいもつとみなされていた。

当時の国営テレビ放送は、ライバル局がなかったから大成功を収めた。日曜の午後８時にはサッカーの試合を中継していた。時々闘牛もやっていた。闘牛は僕の祖父が唯一観ていた番組だった。土曜の午後４時には映画をやっていた。ウエスタンものが多かったが、僕らは欠かさず見ていた。ただ、不可解なことに、いつも映画が始まる直前になって、くどめのオヤジが画面に現れて、いくつかのことわざについて３０分間説明する、という恐ろしくつまらない番組をやっていた。幸いなことに、すぐに代わりの番組が登場した。日本から来た連載アニメだ。アニメは瞬く間にスペインの子供たちを魅了した。まず「Heidi（アルプスの少女ハイジ）」（１９７５）が放送され、「Marco（母を訪ねて三千里）」、「Mazinger Z(マシンガーZ)」が続いた。以降、たくさんの作品が入ってきた。

１９７０年代終わりごろからカラーテレビが普及し、民放チャンネルの放送も始まった。国営チャンネルも少し前まではCM収入があった。それでも経営は常に苦しかったようだ。　しかも、スペインの国営チャンネルは、他のヨーロッパ諸国や日本のように特別な受診料をとっていない。

数年前にデジタル放送に変わってからはチャンネル数が急増したが、クオリティは上がっていない。今の国営チャンネルはCMを流さず、一定のクオリティを保っているが、その他のチャンネルは低俗なゴミ番組ばかり。専門性やクオリティが高いチャンネルは有料だ。とはいえ、テレビの視聴者数は年々減少傾向にある。インターネットで好きな番組を選んで観る、パソコン、タブレット、携帯を使って楽しむ、という人が増えているからだ。

La televisión

Hace poco, por casualidad, cayó en mis manos un libro sobre los dibujos animados que veíamos hace muchos años. Lo publicó un dibujante de cómics que se llama Guillem Medina y se titula Abuelito, dime tú.  Así empezaba la canción de la serie “Heidi” en español.

La televisión, como tantas otras cosas, llegó tarde a este país. Hasta finales de los 70 tuvimos televisión en blanco y negro (la de la foto) y hasta que no se estropeó, solo un canal. Luego dos, los dos públicos. Entonces, los electrodomésticos no tenían chips de obsolescencia programada y cuando uno se compraba una nevera, pensaba que le duraría, por lo menos, la mitad de la vida.

Aquella televisión basó su éxito en la falta de competencia, en la retransmisión de un partido de fútbol los domingos por la tarde, a las ocho, de una corrida de toros de cuando en cuando, que era lo único que miraba mi abuelo, y de una película los sábados a las cuatro, después de comer. No nos perdíamos la película de los sábados, normalmente una del oeste. Nunca entendí por qué, justo antes de la película, tenía que salir un señor muy pesado haciendo un programa aburridísimo de media hora donde explicaba uno o dos refranes. Afortunadamente, no tardaron mucho en cambiarlo por una retahíla de series de dibujos animados que a los niños de aquella época nos fascinaron: primero Heidi (1975), luego Marco y finalmente Mazinger Z (1978), Después siguieron otras muchas.

A finales de los setenta se generalizó la televisión en color y empezó a haber algunas cadenas privadas. La televisión pública hasta hace muy poco se financiaba con publicidad pero siempre ha sido siempre muy deficitaria y nunca ha habido, como en otros países de Europa o en Japón un impuesto específico para pagarla.

Hace unos años se digitalizaron las emisiones, lo que multiplicó el número de canales, pero no la calidad. Hoy en día los canales públicos estatales emiten sin anuncios y tienen cierta calidad, pero todos los otros canales generalistas producen básicamente telebasura de baja calidad para personas con nivel de exigencia un poco bajo y de cierta edad. Los canales temáticos o de calidad son de pago. Cada vez más personas han dejado de mirar la televisión porque prefieren escoger lo que prefieren mirar en internet o con las múltiples posibilidades que ofrecen los ordenadores, las tablets o los móviles.

A few days ago a book fell into my hands about the old cartoons we used to watch on TV a long time ago, in the 1970s. It was written by a cartoonist called Guillem Medina and its name is Abuelito, dime tú. That was the first line of the main theme for the cartoon series “Heidi” in Spanish.

Television, as many other things in this country, arrived late. Until the late 1970s we had just a black and white TV at home, and until it finally broke down, we could see just one TV channel. Then, we had two, both of them public TV. Then, appliances had no planned obsolescence chips and when you bought a fridge, it was supposed to last, at least, for half of your life.

That old State TV was a success because it had no competitors, it broadcasted a soccer game every Sunday in the evening, at 8:00, and bullfights now and then, which was the only thing in TV my grandfather ever watched. There was a movie, too, every Saturday at 4:00, just after lunch. We never missed that movie, which more often than not was an American western. I never understood why, just before the movie, there was a really boring man speaking for about thirty minutes about one or two Spanish proverbs. Luckily, shortly afterwards some Japanese cartoons arrived and  fascinated the Spanish children of that time. First it was Heidi (1975), then Marco and finally Mazinger Z (1978). Later many others took their places.

At the end of the 1970s colour TV arrived everywhere and private TV channels were born. Public TV was financed with adverts until very recently, but it has always been losing money. No government has dared, up to now, to create a tax to pay for public TV, as the one you can find in most European countries or Japan. 

Some years ago, broadcasting became digitalized, which made new TV channels sprout everywhere, but it didn´t increase TV quality at all. Nowadays, TV channels belonging to the State broadcast without adverts and offer some quality, but all the other mainstream channels produce basically low quality TV for people more elderly than not and with a low quality demanding level. Thematic channels have to be paid. More and more people are not watching much TV, because they prefer to choose what they want to watch on the internet, or use some of the possibilities offered by computers, tablets or mobile phones.
