クリスマスの変わった慣習 - Caganer i Cagatió - Weird Christmas traditions

秋になると、１１月からクリスマスにかけてバルセロナ大聖堂前でクリスマス市「サンタ・リュシア」が開かれる。1786年から続く、市内で最もポピュラーなクリスマス市だ。学校でも毎年、低学年の生徒を対象にサンタ・リュシア見学が行われる。今年も幼稚部（3～5歳）の教師が見学の写真を見せてくれた。

サンタ・リュシア市ではクリスマスの飾りが主に販売されている。おなじみのモミの木やサンタクロースから、ベレン（イエス・キリスト誕生のシーンを再現したもの。聖女マリア、ヨセフ、去勢牛や雌ラバなどが出てくる）のようなスペイン特有の飾りつけまで、いろんなものを買うことができる。ベレンには様々な職業を象徴する人形が数多く登場するが、カタルーニャではなぜか変わった人形がつきものだ。その名も「カガネー」（排泄人形）。ズボンを下げて用をたしている（もちろん“大”の方）農夫の人形である。ベレンには欠かせない人形で、あまりの人気にもはやベレンとは独立した地位を確立してしまった。バルセロナにはカガネー専門メーカーがあって、サッカー選手、政治家、歌手といった有名人に似せたカガネーを製造している。今年の売れ筋はカタルーニャの守護聖母モンセラのカガネー。カタルーニャの一部のカトリック団体はこれに猛抗議し、メーカーを訴えるとまで言っているそうだ。とはいえ、モンセラは二番人気。一番人気なんとローマ法王フランシスコだ。これを起訴するという話はなぜか聞かない。

サンタ・リュシアでのもう一つの人気商品は「カガティオ」だ。「カガ」（排泄する）の意味はもう明らかだが、「ティオ」はカタルーニャ語で「燃えさし」を意味する。カガティオは毛布でくるまれた薪で、切り口に笑顔が描かれ、カタルーニャの民族帽バレティナをかぶっている。12月に入ると、人々はこの「ティオ」にお菓子のようなちょっとしたプレゼントを食べさせる（実際には毛布の下に隠す）。クリスマスになると、子供たちは歌を歌いながら薪を棒で叩いてティオに“排泄”させる（プレゼントを出させる）。歌：

カタルーニャのユーモアはよく“糞尿趣味”と言われる。糞や汚いものに関連したテーマが好んで使われるということだが、実はもう一つの要素がある。「死後の生命を考える」という意味だ。つまり、「聖なるもの」と「排泄物」という両極をなすものも、ひとつの祝祭を通じれば一体化してしまうらしい。スペイン語にもちょうどそんな言い回しがある。「Los extremos se tocan」（両極端は相通じる）。

Caganer i Cagatió

En otoño, desde finales de noviembre hasta justo antes de Navidad, se celebra en Barcelona delante de la catedral desde 1786 la Fira de Santa Llúcia, el mercado navideño más conocido de esta ciudad. Cada año la escuela, como tantas otras,   organiza una salida para que los más pequeños lo visiten y este año una compañera de educación infantil me ha pasado un par de fotos.

La Fira de Santa Llúcia es un lugar donde se venden básicamente adornos navideños, desde los que tienen que ver con otras tradiciones, como los abetos or Santa Claus, hasta los que pertenecen a tradiciones propias como el belén: la representación de Jesús como bebé junto a sus padres, un buey y una mula. Hay belenes de miles de figuras representando todo tipo de oficios, pero hay una aportación propia catalana, que resulta curiosa: la figura de un campesino con los pantalones bajados haciendo sus necesidades: el “caganer”. La figura en cuestión no suele faltar en ningún belén y tiene tanto éxito que ha llegado a independizarse del belén para adquirir entidad propia. Hay una empresa especializada en fabricar figuras de “caganers” imitando a personajes famosos, futbolistas, políticos, cantantes… El “caganer” estrella de este año es “caganera”: la Virgen de Montserrat, lo que ha causado gran escándalo entre algunos católicos catalanes, hasta el punto de que dicen que van a llevar a los tribunales al fabricante. Sin embargo, es solo la segunda más vendida este año. ¿La primera? La del Papa Francisco. No hay noticia que nadie vaya a poner un pleito por eso. Curioso.

Otro de los productos estrella de la Fira de Santa Llúcia es el Cagatió. La parte de “caga” creo que ya está clara. “Tió” (tizón en español) es la madera que queda incandescente después de arder. El “Cagatió” es un tronco cubierto con una manta,  con cara sonriente y sombrero típico catalán (barretina).  Desde principios de diciembre se “alimenta” el “tió” con regalos que se esconden en él, como golosinas, por ejemplo. Llegado el momento, los niños “fan cagar el tió” (hacen cagar al tizón) Los regalos golpeándolo con un palo, mientras cantan esta canción:

Se suele decir que el sentido del humor de los catalanes es un poco escatológico. “Escatológico” se refiere en este caso a “que tiene que ver con los excrementos o la suciedad”, pero también tiene otro significado, que es “estudio del más allá, de la otra vida más allá de la muerte”. En este caso, parece que dos cosas tan alejadas como lo más sagrado y los excrementos se pueden unir en una misma celebración. En español solemos utilizar una frase hecha para algo así: “Los extremos se tocan.”

Weird Christmas traditions

In autumn, from the end of November until just before Christmas, there is a Christmas market in Barcelona called “Fira de Santa Llúcia”. It has been taking place since 1786 and it is the best-known Christmas market in the city. Every year, this school, as many others, takes the little ones out to see it, and this year one of my colleagues has sent me two pictures she took there.

The “Fira de Santa Llúcia” is a place where you can basically buy Christmas decorations; from other traditions, such as Christmas trees or Santa Claus; or from our own traditions, such as belén (nativity scene): a group of figures representing Jesus as a baby with his parents, an ox and a mule. There are belenes with thousands of figures representing any kind of trades, but there is one figure which is a Catalan curious contribution: a farmer squatting down, showing his bottom and relieving himself: a “caganer”. You can find this figure in every belén and it was and is so successful that it has gained independence from the nativity scene and got its own relevance. There is a firm dedicated to make these “caganer” figures imitating famous people, footballers, politicians, singers… This year second best seller is a female “caganer”: the Holy Virgin of Montserrat squatting down. The figure has greatly shocked some catholic Catalans. They want to bring the manufacturer to court. However, I still haven´t heard anything about bringing him to court because of their very best-selling figure:  the Pope Francis. That is curious.

Another hot item at Fira de Santa Llúcia is Cagatio (Cacka-tee-oh). We already know what “cagar” means, so we won´t press the point. “Tió” (tizón in Spanish) means “coal”, a glowing piece of wood. “Cagatió” is a log with a smiley face and a typical red Catalan hat called “barretina”. It is covered with a blanket so that it won´t catch the flu. From the beginning of December it is “fed” with small presents for children, such as sweets or little toys, which are hidden in it. Finally, the children hit it with a stick to make it “poop” all the presents, while they sing this song:

 Some say the Catalan sense of humour can be a bit “eschatological”, meaning here “something that has to do with excrements or filth”. The word has another meaning, though. It has to do with the study of afterlife or the end of times.  In this case, it seems that two things that are so far away as the most sacred and excrements may be joined in the same celebration. In Spanish we say that sometimes the extremes meet (“los extremos se tocan”).
