学期が終了すると、いつも自分の住んでいる社会、自分の 仕事について改めて考えてしまう。今からおよそ３０年前、スペインがEUに加盟し、ようやく確立した「福祉国家」は、早くも崩れつつある。不況から脱却するためには、定年、失業保険、貧困層への補助といった国民を守るための手段を断つしかないという。人々を守るためのこうした政策こそヨーロッパの夢であり、ヨーロッパの一員となる理由でもあったはずなのに、その夢が実現できないのであれば、ヨーロッパの存在自体も危ういのではないだろうか。
ヨーロッパの若者は、僕たちの世代よりもずっと厳しい生活を強いられるだろうと言われている。ところが、学校はそのことにどうやら気づいていないようだ。スペインの学校は、平等で寛容な学校を目指しているらしい。試験を排除し、落第や落ちこぼれをなくす、なんて話も出ている。今の社会は、日々競争が激化し、生活環境もだんだん厳しくなっている。生徒たちがこれからの人生にうまく適応できるよう、学校は適切な教育を施しているだろうか。正直言って、僕にはあまり自信がない。
Final de curso
Cuando está a
punto de acabar otro curso, me da por pensar en la sociedad donde vivo, y en lo
que hago. Me da la impresión de que lo que llamamos el “estado del bienestar”, que
en España hemos disfrutado apenas desde que entramos en la UE, hace unos 30
años, se está disolviendo rápidamente. Nos dicen que la única manera de tirar
la economía adelante es precisamente acabar con la protección del estado sobre
los ciudadanos: jubilaciones, subsidios por desempleo, gastar dinero en los más
débiles. Pues esa protección ha sido en
buena parte el sueño de Europa y la razón para muchos para formar parte de ella,
y si ese sueño no puede existir, dudo mucho que Europa pueda hacerlo.
Dicen que la
vida de los europeos más jóvenes será mucho más dura que la nuestra. Pues en la
escuela no nos hemos enterado. Tenemos un modelo de escuela inclusiva tan
tolerante, que hasta se habla de eliminar los exámenes, no sea que alguien
pueda suspender o sentirse frustrado, en una sociedad cada vez más competitiva
y despiadada. No estoy muy seguro de si estamos preparando bien a nuestra gente
para el futuro.
End of the
schoolyear
Now, when the schoolyear is almost over, I take to
think about this society and my job. I have the impression that what we call
the welfare state, which we have been enjoying in Spain just for about 30
years, since we are in the EU, is quickly dissolving. They say the only way to
keep our economics going in the right way would precisely be putting an end to
the state protection on citizens: pensions, unemployment subsidies, spending
money on the weaker. Well, that protection has been a good part of the European
dream and the reason for many to belong to it and, if that dream cannot exist,
I seriously doubt that Europe can do it.
They say young Europeans will probably have much
harder lives than ours. Well, that piece of news doesn´t seem to have arrived
to Spanish schools. Our inclusive school model is so tolerant, that we are even
talking of doing away with exams, just in case that somebody could fail them
and feel frustrated, in a society which is getting more and more competitive
and pitiless. I am not really sure that we are preparing our people for the
future as we should do.
